Barba Ive, fisherman

Barba Ive, fisherman

Ive Burić was born in a fisherman's house on the waterfront. At fourteen he first went out to sea with his father, and later he hauled nets around the Kornati islands in his own gajeta. When his back grew tired of nets, he turned the old stone shed on the shore into a konoba: two tables, a fireplace and a peka he lit whenever he came home from the sea.

They call him Barba, which means uncle, because that is what all the children in the village called him. The name stuck, and so did the habit of bringing every guest bread, olive oil and the question whether they are hungry.

How it all began

1962

First time at sea

At fourteen, Ive goes out with his father to fish for sardines for the first time.

1986

The konoba opens

The first guests sit down at two tables in the old stone net shed. On the menu: the fish of the day and house wine from the barrel.

2009

Mare takes over the kitchen

After culinary school and seasons in coastal hotels, Mare comes home. Pašticada and black risotto, made to grandmother's recipe, join the menu.

2018

The terrace by the sea

Under a new vine pergola a terrace with forty seats is built, five metres from the water.

2022

Toni takes the terrace

Grandson Toni finishes his hospitality degree, comes home and takes over the terrace, the wine list and the online reservations.

Good to know

We prepare octopus and lamb under the peka only to order: reserve them a day ahead by phone or in the notes of your online reservation, for at least two people. We light the peka in the morning.

Fresh fish is sold by the kilo and the price depends on the catch, usually between €55 and €95. Before cooking, we show and weigh the fish in front of you, so you know the price in advance.

When the bora keeps the fishermen ashore, there is less fresh fish or none at all. Then we recommend the pašticada and the lamb, and we serve only fresh fish: never frozen.

Of course: there are a few berths in front of the konoba for guests, free while you dine with us. Let us know in advance, especially in July and August.

Children are always welcome: we have high chairs and a kids' plate, and the early family dinner from 5:00 PM to 6:30 PM is even cheaper. Dogs are welcome on the terrace.

Yes, though not many: Swiss chard with potatoes, local salads, peka-baked potatoes and desserts. Tell us when you book and Mare will prepare something special, such as a vegetable risotto.

We are open every day from 12:00 PM to 10:45 PM. The main season runs from Easter to October; out of season, call us the day before so that we can get fresh fish. Parking is above the village, a five-minute walk from the konoba.
